5 Viral Indian Wedding Dances To Take Inspiration From

1. Surprise Bridesmaids Mehendi Dance | Chaudhary, Chhalka Chhalka Re, Chitta Kukkad

Let’s start with the video that I find myself constantly coming back to for bridesmaid choreography inspiration, or just for a therapeutic watch because that’s how beautiful this dance is. As soon as the instrumental of the first song Chaudhary starts playing, it immediately transports you to that magical outdoor haldi or mehendi setting that every girl has always dreamed of. The secret to these girls’ success lies in the fact that the moves themselves are kept simple while retaining a lot of flow and elegance. The simplicity of the choreography then allows for a greater focus in developing synchronisation across the group. You’ll notice that the elements of each dance move are primarily coming from the upper body accompanied by gorgeous smiles and laughter.

This actually is one of our biggest pieces of advice to our clients - you’re better off focusing on synchronising the moves so that everyone looks uniform, rather than trying to overcompensate with complex choreography that may look like a mess on the day. Now don’t get me wrong, there are definitely amazing dancers in this squad, one of my all time favourites being Saloni Saraf, but this beautiful routine would be perfect for beginner-intermediate level dancers to pick up comfortably. With over 81 million views on this video and the bride being brought to tears, these ladies have really proved that ‘less is more’.

2. All Boys Engagement Dance performance I Lemonade, Tere Liye, Munda Sohna, Mast Kalandar, Naatu Naatu

If I had to recommend the most memorable all boys wedding dance choreography that I have ever come across that had me literally squealing in my seat - it would have to be Gaurav Thukral’s engagement dance performance for sure! Now look, Gaurav is a professional choreographer, dancer and director of a creative arts studio, so yes I understand that this level of a performance sets unrealistic expectations for most. BUT putting the amazing dance talent aside, the thing that brings me so much joy when I watch this dance is the VIBES that these boys create through cheeky expressions and engaging not only the audience but actually interacting with each other throughout the piece. I would recommend taking great notice of that, because some of the most successful and enjoyable wedding performances are when the dancers are not simply just smiling but in fact exchanging laughs, hi-fives and hyping each other up within the choreography itself.

This performance is also a great example of striking the perfect balance between energetic, complex choreography whilst also having moments of stillness and breaks where the music and expressions sing through. There’s no denying that there’s moments throughout this choreography that are intricate and geared towards more advanced level dancers, but these boys are not afraid of incorporating relaxed moments and gimmicks (my favourite being during Tere Liye at 1:22 minutes where they re-enact riding a motorcycle, the vibes are impeccable).

All in all, if the aim of a performance is to get your guests out of their seats and dancing along with you, then this performance fits the brief flawlessly!

DA Choreo’s Hot Tips for Sangeet Dances

  1. Focus on synchronisation across your group rather than complex choreography.

  2. Have a mix of high energy choreography as well as moments of stillness (a great way to give yourself a break) to demonstrate a variety of vibes.

  3. Expressions are EVERYTHING, try to upgrade your smile to varying cheeky expressions and nakhra throughout your performance.

  4. Incorporate gimmicks and moments of interaction between the dancers as well as the audience.

  5. MOST IMPORTANT TIP: drop all inhibition, just have fun with it and you’ll never regret it.

3. Family Engagement Medley Dance Performance | Chogada, Kajra Re, Do You Wanna Partner, Desi Girl

There’s no way you could have missed Shivani Bafna and Shyam Shah’s iconic wedding - especially following a Dharma Production-esque level of a proposal that was truly out of this world (well in Paris to be more specific, smack bang in front off the Eiffel Tower - no biggie)!

Family Bollywood wedding choreography can often be quite tricky and time consuming to organise, particularly with challenges such as a greater variation in dancing abilities, choreographing to cater to older members of the family, arranging dance practices for large groups and even co-ordinating with family members that may be based overseas. A great way to bypass these issues is to break off a large family group into smaller groups (even reducing it down to duets or solos), which can all be joined together to create a medley piece - and this is something Shivani and Shyam manage seamlessly. Our FAVOURITE part has to be the father-son dance at 8:35 minutes (more specifically the dramatic slap at 8:47, I have watched that on repeat way too many times). The way this father-son duo just lets loose and truly immerse themselves in the moment brings such a degree of vitality to this performance, it’s impossible to look away!

Again, you’ll notice a common theme across all these performances - drop all inhibition, just have fun with it and you’ll never regret it.

4. Advanced Level Girls Bollywood Wedding Choreography | Ghagra, Khwab Dekhe, Chikni Chameli, Sharara, Tip Tip, Sheila Ki Jawaani

This girls dance performance is an absolute show stopper and will leave you with your jaw dropped to the floor the entire time you’re watching. Disclaimer - this dance definitely sets unrealistic standards for all of us to reach and re-creating it is definitely not for the faint hearted. This girls squad is filled with social media dancing sensations such as Iman, Poonam and Priyanka, Seerat, Eshani, Nidhi, Shivani and of course the bride and renowned Bollywood choreographer herself Anisha - all of whom are spectacular dancers and choreographers and whose journeys we have been following for years. So you can imagine our fan girl moment when this hit the internet!

Anisha’s choreography is unapologetic in platforming female sensuality and exhibiting the epitome of girl-boss energy - and we’re so here for it! This routine is layered with so many intricacies when it comes to staggering choreography across formations, canon sequences and really drawing upon every single beat the music has to offer. Everyone’s hair is legitimately a paid dancer, particularly in Khwab Dekhe (starting from 1:00 minute) where hair-whipping is utilised so effective and tastefully in creating powerful moments. This ensemble piece is a testament to ‘more is more is more’ and it’s bloody brilliant.

5. Grooms and Friends Bhangra Dance | Ban Ja Rani

Now, if you’re looking for a surefire way to entertain your Indian wedding guests and maximise hype, there’s no better way to do so than to add a segment of bhangra into it! I am absolutely obsessed with the bhangra choreography this squad pulls off at 3:30mins to a groovy remix of Ban Ja Rani. The synchronisation, the smooth nakhra (expressions) and that perfect build up to the drop - everything about it is giving chef’s kiss.

Pull off something like this, there’s no doubt there’ll be a smile on the face of every single person in that room!
